HEBREWS RESEARCH PROJECT

PROS EBRAIOUS
(pros Heb-rah'-yos)
(to the Hebrews)

Welcome to the Hebrews Research project course.

INSTRUCTIONS

In this course you will research and submit a paper on the connection between the book of Hebrews and the Old Testament Law.  Your research will concentrate on the teachings and comparisons concerning the New Covenant under Christ and the Old Covenant under the Mosaic Law as was presented in the New Testament book of Hebrews.  In addition you will research any connections between the book of Hebrews and the Old Testament Prophets.

  • It is required that you have taken and passed the course on Hebrews.  This is a prerequisite for taking this course.

  • Suggestions on how to proceed:   SIGN IN if you have not already done so.
    1. You have already completed a verse by verse study of the book of Hebrews, this is a prerequisite for attending this class, so it would be beneficial to you to review that study and pick out direct comparisons and references in Hebrews that obviously refer to or are connected with the Law and/or the Prophets of the Old Testament.  Make a list of points to include in your research.
    2. After exhausting the previous approach, you should then reread the book of Hebrews and pick out any obvious points of contact between it and the Old Testament Law not previously noted as explicit points of contact and add these to your list of points to include in your research.
    3. Finally, make a note of any points of contact between the book of Hebrews and the writings of the Old Testament Prophets.
NOTE: There will also be some points of contact with the Old Testament Psalms where they are, in turn, connected with the Old Testament Law and the Prophets or the New Testament book of Hebrews.  Many statements in the Psalms are directly connected in this manner and you may add them to your list of points for research.

  • ATTENTION:  There is some misunderstanding about the content expected for this paper.  The following is for clarification:
    1. Find points of contact between the Book of Hebrews and the Old Testament Law and/or The Prophets.
    2. Expound on those points of contact.
    3. Expositions can be on the order of; comparisons between the Old and the New; revealing of meaning in the New as compared to the hidden statements in the Old; direct references or quotes in the New of doctrines, sacrifices, statements, people, meanings, etc., found in the Old.  And other such expositions and comparisons.
    4. These are only some suggestions of how to proceed.  Expansion of the understanding of the book of Hebrews by comparison of it with the Old, or the opposite, expansion of the understanding of the Old by comparison of it with the book of Hebrews is the general idea of what could be included in the Research Paper.
    5. Example:
(Point of contact) Melchisedec (Melchizedec) is mentioned in the Old Testament and in the book of Hebrews in (give scripture reference in Hebrews)
In the Old Testament in (scripture reference) Melchisedec is presented as:
          A. ---------------
          B. ---------------
          C. ---------------
In the book of Hebrews he is presented as:
          A. --------------
          B. --------------
          C. --------------
(Then would come your text giving your explanation or comparison)
It is easy to see that the Old Testament presentation prefigures the New Testament presentation of ----------------------.
With this presentation in Hebrews it explains some of the questions left in the minds of the readers of (Old Testament Scripture reference.)  The connections can be understood in the following comparison:
        A. ---------------
        B. ---------------
This point of contact is solidified in the book of Hebrews by the author's presentation of illustrations and usage of explanatory terms such as, ---------, --------, (etc.)

After completing this point you would then continue with the rest of the points of contact that you have discovered and are going to address in your paper.

This is only one suggested possible way of arranging and writing the paper; but it is sufficient to show you that you are not to simply follow the outline of the book of Hebrews given in our course on that book and simply rearranging the words or expounding on them, even in the exact order given, as some students have done.  It is to be a research paper on points of contact between the Old Testament and the book of Hebrews and not simply an expanded outline taken from the one given in our Hebrews course or some other equivalent course.

  • Outline:
    1. Using the list you made with all of the points of contact between Hebrews and the Old Testament Law and the Prophets, make an outline to guide you through the composition of your research paper.
    2. Your outline must be submitted before proceeding with your actual research and composition and must be in proper outline format.  Click HERE for instructions for a proper outline format and a sample outline.  Write the outline in your word-processor and then attach that file to an email and send it to us.  Use the Subject line, Hebrews Research Paper Outline and send it to docvbk@saltlakebiblecollege.org
Click the following blue link to open a preformatted email.  Hebrews Research Paper Outline
Do not change the Subject line.
In the body of the email include:
              A. Your full name.
              B.
    Your email address.
              C.
The words, "Hebrews Research Paper Outline.
              D. The date.
Make sure you attach the outline file to the email before you click Send.

    3.
If you find during your research that you need to deviate from your outline, then submit an amended outline that includes your new points or sub-points.  All additions must fit in with the overall coherence and direction of your research paper.
    4. You must keep a log of time spent in research.  The log will be entitled "Hebrews Research Paper." In that log must be the date, time start, and time finish, of each research session.  You must submit this log to us when you submit your research paper. Submission of your log is required for you to receive credit for this course. Minimum hours of research required for the course is 32 hours.  You may use as many hours of research as you want but the minimum is 32 hours.  Research time does not include time spent in preparing your outline nor does it include time spent in the final composition of the paper.  It is to be time spent in research alone.  However, it can include the time spent writing preliminary notes while in the process of doing research which, of course, is part of the research process.  But the actual composition time for the final paper is not included as research time in the log.  Only actual research time is to be recorded in the log.  There is a link to the log form on the next page.

  • PLAGIARISM WARNING:  Read this warning before proceeding.  To access page, click HERE

  • Attendance: Minimum attendance for the course is 16 weeks and maximum attendance is 25 weeks.
There is no lesson attendance for this course because there are no formatted lessons.  Therefore, minimum lesson attendance on your Begin Sign In form is "0" weeks.  You must submit a Begin Sign In form when you begin this course and a Finish Sign In form when you have had your paper accepted by the college.  On both of those forms you will input "0" weeks as minimum lesson attendance.

  • Rewrites: If you receive notice that your paper needs to go through a rewrite, which could be for various reasons of which you will be notified, then such rewrites will not be included as Research time unless you actually have to do some additional research for information needed in order to accomplish the rewrite.  You then will include only the time spent on additional research in a new amended "Hebrews Research Paper" log.  You will have already submitted the original log when you submitted your original composition and you will submit an amended one to include time spent on additional research.

  • Credits: The course is worth 3 credits which will be awarded upon your completion of all requirements, including submission of your outline, and your "Research Log for Hebrews," and our acceptance of your research paper.  Research paper will be pass or fail.  A grade of 100% will be awarded if the paper is accepted.

  • Format and submission of Research Paper: Use proper formatting.
